How To Relieve Heavy Legs?

Obtain the right weight for your build, don’t stay in one position for too long, and if possible, lift your legs above the heart to promote blood circulation.

The main causes of heavy legs are circulatory problems. That is, when the blood cannot return to the heart and it is retained in the calves or ankles.

Symptoms of heavy legs

The symptoms of this problem are:

  • The feeling of heaviness.
  • Fatigue when you are standing.
  • Swelling in the lower extremities.
  • Cramps.
  • Itching.
  • Numbness.

Heavy legs are a condition that affects women more than men. This can trigger various pathologies, such as:

  • Edemas
  • Dermatitis
  • Varicose veins
  • Phlebitis
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Water retention

Habits to relieve heavy legs

If you suffer from tired or heavy legs several times a week, you may need to see a doctor. You can also supplement any treatment with a healthy lifestyle.

Avoid spending too much time in the same position

If you work sitting or standing without moving, change your position from time to time. For example, if you spend all day in front of your computer, you can also get up and take a few steps around the desk.

If you are continually on your feet, try to sit up as soon as you can.

You can also  do exercises while sitting at your desk by taking off your shoes or lowering their uppers.

Do not cross your legs and always try to keep your feet firmly on the ground. Also avoid high heels or very tight shoes.

Lift your legs during the day

The ideal is to lift your legs and feet several times during the day. Or do it as soon as you get home. The idea is that the legs are above the heart.

You can also lie on the bed and elevate your legs by resting your heels against the wall. When you sleep, put a pillow under your calves.

Do not expose yourself to heat

Here are some bad habits that harm tired legs, among others:

  • Lie down for a long time in the sun.
  • Go to a sauna or spa.
  • Go to a jacuzzi or a heated swimming pool.
  • Depilate with hot wax.
  • Showering with water that is too hot.
  • Turn on the heat too high.
  • Use clothes that are too warm.

Do not drink alcohol or smoke

Alcoholic drinks dilate and contract the veins, making them more permeable. And  they also cause swelling in the legs. On the other hand, tobacco affects the health of the veins and arteries.

Lose weight

The extra pounds make it worse and prevent the blood from flowing as it should.

If you are suffering from obesity, it would be good to start a healthy diet, not only to reduce tired legs syndrome but also for general health.

Heavy leg exercises

Exercises are very important in reducing circulatory problems and therefore heavy legs. Among the best are:

Walk on tiptoe

Take off your shoes and walk on your tiptoes in your socks (or compression stockings). Raise your heels as high as possible and bend your knees a little.

The flamingo position

Put the sole of one foot on the side of the opposite leg (to form a right angle). Hold the posture for a few seconds and switch legs. To be even more effective, do it on your tiptoes.

Open and close the legs

Lie on the floor or on a floor mat (you can also do this on the bed). Raise your legs so that they are perpendicular to the floor. Open and then close them like scissors a few times.

Pedal

Lying down, curl your legs towards your chest and do pedaling movements as if you were cycling. Perform this exercise for a few minutes with both legs, then rest.
